Chicken parm, parfait, and more playful treats are on the menu at Bucky's Poblacion
The Makati branch has more than just those amazing "non-brownies."
5666 Don Pedro Street, Poblacion, Makati
Open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Tuesday to Thursday); and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Friday to Sunday)
(SPOT.ph) If you’re constantly on the lookout for the newest eating places around the Metro, you already know that the Poblacion district in Makati is the latest gastronomical place to be. Little neighborhood restaurants are popping up on almost every corner, and it’s a welcome alternative to the usual commercial fare.
Bucky’s, that impossible-to-resist block of goodness that’s “not a brownie,” joins this growing community with the opening of their own restaurant at Don Pedro Street. Instead of just doling out your favorite Bucky paired with ice cream or coffee (not that we would mind!), this branch whips up a selection of dishes that Chef Justin Golangco describes as “delicious comfort food.” He and co-owner Miguel Vargas worked together to develop a menu that aimed to complement the existing Bucky’s desserts. Simply put, nothing too fancy or overpowering.
The result is an evolving menu of “kid’s food” that you can enjoy in a laid-back space lit by warm lights, punctuated with cool elements like whimsical-looking rabbits stamped on the wall. While waiting for your food, see how many of the bunnies you can find, or check out the chalkboard wall for a list of toppings for their soft-serve ice cream (More on that later!). No time to stay for a bite? There’s a take-away counter outside so you can pick up something quick while your car is double-parked on the road.
If you’re staying for lunch, prepare to leave feeling happily full. At first glance, you’ll be amazed at how the fillet in the Chicken Parm (P250) overflows from its crunchy ciabatta casing, but you’ll also marvel at how the marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese are so skillfully layered, they don’t end up as a sloppy mess all over your lap. Moist and flavorful, the salty chicken breast sandwich goes well with the twister fries served on the side.
Chef's Special Swedish Meatballs/Potato Salad
Fried Chicken/Mashed Potatoes
Those who find themselves unable to choose can go for either the Chef’s Special Swedish Meatballs/Potato Salad (P300) or their best-selling Fried Chicken/Mashed Potatoes (P275). Made with minced angus beef, the dense and peppery meatballs are best consumed in smaller portions. Slice it in two to see the juicy, pinkish center before spearing it with pieces of fried baby potatoes, red onions, and some light sauce.
Cooked to golden brown perfection, the two-piece double-fried chicken is a fan favorite due to its extra crunchy chicken skin, tender yet tasty interior (plus points for being boneless!), buttery country gravy (try the chicken with and without it!), and the silky smooth roasted garlic mashed potato that you hardly need to chew. Thanks to its popularity, this dish has been a mainstay on the menu since the restaurant’s opening.
It would be wise to save some space for dessert—that is, after all, what Bucky’s is known for. Order a piece of the fudgy, flourless Bucky (ranging from P80 to P120) or go for more adventurous suggestions such as their coffee-based Buckygato (P160), soft-serve ice cream in cup or waffle cone (P100), and parfaits (P200 to P250). Only the Makati branch currently serves two soft-serve flavors as well as the parfaits, so it’s a good excuse to swing by!
Make Your Own Bucky's Parfait
Go for the Original Parfait (P200) for a heavenly blend of creamy milk soft-serve ice cream interlaced with dark chocolate chips, white marshmallows, crushed brown butter polvoron, salted caramel syrup, and huge chunks of original Bucky. You’ll enjoy the contrast of soft, crumbly, and chewy elements in every sweet and creamy spoonful.
Feeling creative? Experiment with your favorite toppings and order a Make Your Own Bucky’s Parfait (P250). Pick a Bucky (Original, Buckies n’ Cream, Grumpy’s, Spiced, Super, Chunky Blonde, Bugs Buckies, or Yana Banana), choose your soft-serve base (milk and strawberry at the moment), select three toppings (milk powder, marshmallows, shaved coconut, dark choco chip, granola, brown butter polvoron, pistachio, fruity pebbles, cinnamon toast, rainbow sprinkles, walnuts, rice krispies, and cornflakes), then drizzle with sauce (chocolate or salted caramel). For our MYOBP, we went with a Grumpy’s, dark choco chip, walnuts, rainbow sprinkles, and chocolate syrup over a slightly tart strawberry soft-serve.
Hopping from childhood-inspired meals to playful concoctions, Bucky’s proves that it’s alright to go down the proverbial rabbit hole and try something new.
