Consuelo Mexican Cantina

Do you and your date love Mexican food? This hole-in-the-wall in Marikina looks and feels just like a Mexican cantina, with colorful tiles, sombreros, and ponchos. While Consuelo doesn’t claim that the dishes are authentic, they definitely pack lots of Mexican flavors, and they’re also big enough for sharing. The Nachos are a must-try: fiery with a pop of freshness from the pico de gallo, and an addicting queso sauce made tangier with mustard.

To split: Nachos (P160), Carnitas (Pork) Tacos (P150)

Total: P310

Consuelo Mexican Cantina is at Block 2 Lot 25, Aquilina Street, Santo Niño, Marikina City.

75 Lilac Café

You can also try to go light with the Creamy Truffle Mushroom Pasta—emphasis on try, because this dish can be surprisingly filling.

While Bucky’s is more known for their chocolatey blocks of goodness that are “not brownies”, they also offer a menu of hearty, grown-up versions of "kid food" in their new restaurant in Poblacion, Makati. Plus, the space is a beauty, with laid-back interiors, wood décor and warm lighting that’ll make you feel at ease, whether it’s your first or hundredth date. Servings are pretty hefty but you must leave room for dessert—it’s what Bucky’s is known for after all.

Le Petit Souffle

Malls may be a convenient dining destination but they aren’t exactly the best place for a romantic date. If you want a spot that’ll make you forget you’re inside a busy shopping center, head to Le Petit Souffle. Their branch in Mega Fashion Hall is a charming cross between a Parisian café and the Japanese kawaii aesthetic, with yellow cushioned chairs, vines winding up and down white trellises, and pretty doodles painted on the walls. The menu also reflects this Japanese-French fusion, resulting in dishes that are playfully novel and, of course, delicious. Don’t forget to grab some pastries to go from Workshop PH, Le Petit Souffle’s in-house, bespoke bakery.

For her: Le Petit Souffle Bacon, Cream, and Egg Pasta (P355)

For him: Chasyu Camembert (P375)

Total: P730

Le Petit Souffle is at 2/F Mega Fashion Hall, Mandaluyong City.

Common Folk

If you want a quiet nook where you and your date can hide away from the rest of the world, head over to Common Folk in White Plains, Quezon City. Their menu of coffee-based drinks is excellent and taste like comfort in a cup, especially when served warm. Make sure not to miss their sandwiches and open-faced toasts—Common Folk doesn’t scrimp on quality ingredients like salmon for their open-faced toasts or a special blend of cheeses for their grilled cheese, making each dish a winner.

For her: Café Latte (P150) and Say Cheese (P260)

For him: Flat White (P140) and House Sub (P250)

La Spezia

You can never go wrong with Italian food when planning a romantic night out. La Spezia divides their menu into four parts, patterned after how Italians dine. There’s the Antipasti or appetizer, the Primi which is usually a pasta dish, the Secondi or meat dish, and the Dolci or dessert. To really get the full Italian dinner experience, the owners recommend ordering at least a Secondi to go with your Primi. The homey interiors will also make you want to linger for hours anyway, so why not do so with more good food?

For her: Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (P440)

For him: Pasta C’Anciova (P340)

To split: Pollo Arosto Patata (P510)

Total: P1,290

La Spezia is at 90 Scout. Dr. Lascano Street, Quezon City.

Don't be intimidated: a three-course meal here starts at P800 while four courses start at P1,200. The pricing becomes even more impressive when you consider the attention to detail that Chef Davide Oldani puts in his every creation. A fine example is the Cipolla Caramellata that comes with a caramelized onion tart served with Gran Padano prepared two ways: as a gelato and as hot cream. A bite will give you a full spectrum of textures and flavors, with the varying temperatures revealing multiple sides to the Gran Padano.

For her: Four Course Meal (P1,200)

For him: Four Course Meal (P1,200)

Total: P2, 400

FOO'D is at G/F Shangri-La at the Fort, Bonifacio Global City.
