You can have three kinds of ribs in one platter at Morganfield's
Fall-off-the-bone ribs, anyone?
2/F Ayala Malls The 30th, 30 Meralco Avenue, Pasig City
Open daily from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.
(SPOT.ph) Listen. Remember those late-night Home Shopping Network segments about steam-cooking that came on just before the loop about the knife set? Your answer is probably, "Eh, vaguely," because who really remembers any of it? Aside from the Australian voiceover telling you that their friendly operators are standing by to take your call.
But those of us who were shamelessly a little more awake than everyone else at 2 a.m. will recall the promises they made about their products. Somehow it got drilled into our heads that you'd want to watch meat fall off the bone, though admittedly there's something terrifically satisfying about it. Morganfield's doesn't make any such promise, but the truth is they don't have to.
The truth is, all of this might not have even happened if not for one specific recipe—the Smoked Peppercorn Spare Ribs (P945/half slab, P1,695/full slab)—so make sure to give it a try during one of your visits. Because there will be multiple visits.
These days most of us will find some appeal in the saying "It's 5 o'clock somewhere"—more often than not to justify a little bit of day-drinking. You'd be into it too if you've had a good look at CNN lately; neither a Singapore Sling (P225) nor a Strawberry Daiquiri (P195) would go amiss. We say that daiquiris work better visually when you're watching disasters unfold.
Ocean Madness (P2,895)
There's nothing disastrous about this place, though. Not the aesthetic, not the music, and certainly not The Carnivore (P2,995). We're not about to make any jabs about Valentine's Day, because it's going to take more than two of you to defeat this thing, though you're welcome to try—one bite of anything on it, and you'll want to. And, yes, you get that dramatic, gratifying, Home Shopping Network-esque, no-knife-needed meat falling off the bone. The only downside is you'll have to pick your rib-poison. If that's not your thing, then the Ribs Sampl3r (P3,295) gives that same satisfaction, but as the name suggests, you get to try all three! Maybe get a Sunset Surprise (P195) to wash it down.
Bacon and Egg Aglio Olio
Volcanic Chocolate Lava Cake
But say you're on your lunch break, and you don't have time to pretend you're Godzilla and a slab of ribs is Tokyo? They've got you covered. Starting at P245, you've got 20 different Value Meal Sets to choose from. We recommend the Bacon and Egg Aglio Olio; something tells us that there is honest-to-goodness bacon grease involved. To cement your singleness firmly in place—er, no, indulge yourself further, you can throw in that Volcanic Chocolate Lava Cake (P149) and consider yourself set.
Morganfield's is very much a family place—more so because there's a gift shop!—and now you can catch it at Pasig's latest mall, Ayala Malls The 30th.
