(SPOT.ph) People are no longer strangers to the multitude of hole-in-the-wall restaurants, student-friendly joints, and trendy hotspots along Maginhawa. Restaurateur and longtime foodie Josie Mislang, however, saw what was missing amidst all the eating-places in the UP-adjacent neighborhood. “The only bakery in Maginhawa was a local panaderia,” says Josie, who has spent the last 21 years helping develop the menus and products of several international food chains in Manila. Mislang saw an opening in the market and so, Sweet Butter + Café was born.

The shop is quaint—it is located in a less busy, more residential pocket of UP Village. Many professionals, residents, and the occasional student flock to the café for its quiet vibe, wide range of food (from sandwiches to small bites, rice meals to desserts), and bright blue and yellow aesthetic. Sweet Butter opened in May 2017 and has already attracted café staples with their sweet treats like the New York Cheesecake (P120/slice, P900/whole cake of eight slices) and its blueberry counterpart that are dense without being too heavy; the light and fluffy Triple Chocolate Mousse (P115/slice, P860/whole cake of eight slices) that's just sweet enough to satisfy the chocolate lover; and the Tiramisu (P185) in creamy cups that make for the perfect single serving.

For those who are looking for heftier lunch options, however, Sweet Butter presents a substantial mix. The Cranberry Feta Salad (P190) is a festive option with mixed greens, dried cranberries, feta, and ham tossed in a cranberry vinaigrette dressing. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich (P140) melds choice cheeses grilled between sourdough slices. The most surprising part of the sandwich is its slightly spicy, garlicky hit. Pasta lovers will enjoy the Spicy Scampi Pasta (P220), a simple serving of penne mixed with shrimp in garlic and olive oil.
No restaurant is complete without rice options. Sweet Butter has all-day breakfast meals that will provide you with a hefty meal under P200. The Beef Tapa meal (P195) offers satisfying well-marinated slices of tapa along with garlic fried rice and two eggs. For those who prefer toast to rice can rest easy. American breakfast is also served—the Bacon, Egg, and Toast (P195) is a popular choice.
“We’re also open for take-out and we really want to build the ‘grab and go’ business as well,” Josie adds. Aside from their signature cake menu, which is set to expand over the next couple of months, Sweet Butter also serves cookies for P45 to P50 a piece, and P225 to P240 for sets of five to six pieces. Filled cookies are a unique option for those with a sweet tooth: the Nutella Filled Cookie (P45), Peanut Butter Filled Cookie (P45), and Double Chocolate Cookie (P45) are popular bestsellers that are never dry and are always baked fresh.
There’s no need to worry about having your Sweet Butter cake keep well in the refrigerator because they are specifically sized smaller than other cakes in the market. “I prefer to go smaller so our stock sells quicker per day,” she explains. “Every day, we bring a new batch in and everyone can look forward to freshly baked cakes.”
If that isn’t enough reason to give this brand-new Maginhawa haunt a visit, carb lovers have a new line to look forward to in the coming weeks. With a sourdough already making grilled cheese aficionados happy, only good things can come out of Sweet Butter.
