Feel Like a Kid Again at This Cookie Heaven in Quezon City
You'll fall in love with the Bacon Tocilog, too!
G/F Ayala Malls Vertis North, Mindanao Avenue, Quezon City
Open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
(SPOT.ph) When was the last time you felt as carefree as a kid? With all the work that goes into being a respectable adult (or into pretending to be one), it’s probably been quite a while. If you feel like you’re drowning beneath waves of responsibilities, the newest and first standalone Scout’s Honor at Ayala Malls Vertis North could be the buoy you need.
It’s hard not to relax once you step inside this sunny restaurant, with a clear camping theme all throughout. The ceiling is made to look like the angular domes of a tent, with pin lights resembling stars. Quirky illustrations show you how to signal for your cookies like a proper Girl or Boy Scout, while another accent wall holds neat rows of essential scouting tools. There’s also a shelf of board games you and your friends can play as you wait for your order. The place’s tailor-fit for kids, but even kids-at-heart are bound to have a good time.
“Our goal really was for kids to have a hangout that centers on food,” says Chef Miko Aspiras. “Mahirap 'yon, since super picky ng kids. But in general, dapat [everything on] our menu, makakain ng kids.”
One thing’s for sure: You can’t go wrong with cookies, whether you’re talking about a kid or a grown-up who should know better than to stuff oneself with sweets. But can you really resist the Ultimate Chocolate Chip (P95), with all the nutty-chocolatey goodness of browned butter, and gooey chocolate chunks? Get it with a glass of Milk (P95), served ice-cold, and pretend you’re sitting in your mom’s kitchen after elementary school classes.
Deep Dark Secret
The Deep Dark Secret (P95/piece), shares Chef Miko, is pretty much all chocolate—flourless, and made with dark chocolate bars and butter, which also gives the cookies a picture-perfect glossy surface. Not that the fact will successfully stop you from having more than one. If that already sounds like music to your ears, brace yourself, because this cookie goes the extra mile with a surprise cream-cheese center.
“When I was a kid, my lola would make me eat malasadong itlog (soft-boiled egg) with rice cooked in garlic and butter,” says Chef Miko. “And masaya na ko no'n. Kasi 'yon 'yong gusto kong flavors. So we centered the menu around those flavors. Pero siyempre, may arte.”
Meatballs in Gravy with Mashed Potato
Homey, but prepared with a little flair: The Meatballs in Gravy (P255) with Mashed Potato (add P20) are the perfect examples. The meatballs taste like they came out of a your mom’s kitchen—tasty but nothing fancy—but a house-made strawberry-jam sauce takes them to the next level, adding a tangy sweetness that cuts through the rich gravy and ultra-creamy mashed potatoes.
The Bacon Tocilog (P235), too, is comfortingly familiar; it’s still classic Pinoy breakfast fare, though in a neat new package. Bacon strips are cooked tocino-style, the fat from the pork adding extra lip-smacking richness to the sticky-sweet glaze. With garlic rice and a sunny side-up egg with a perfectly runny yolk, you have a new go-to feel-good breakfast meal.
Creamy Pesto With Grilled Chicken
Scout’s Honor also carries excellent pasta: The Creamy Pesto With Grilled Chicken (P275) is a great gateway pesto dish if you tend to lean towards cream- or tomato-based pasta. The herby flavor of the pesto sauce isn’t too pronounced, but present enough to let you know it’s there, and the grilled chicken chunks are juicy with a savory bite.
Perfect for hangouts with friends, the Loaded Campfire Potatoes (P135) is loaded with bacon bits and your choice between cool ranch or a cheese sauce (or both!)
The bonfire-inspired Kumbaya (P250) is completely edible with a chocolate bowl, cookies and cream ice cream, crushed cookies, and toasted marshmallow whip
Chef Miko might have envisioned Scout’s Honor with kids in mind, but we won’t be surprised if kids-at-heart come and hang out, too. You do deserve to treat yourself to cookies and a glass of milk every once in a while for trying your best at #Adulting.
