Starbucks Wants to Go Strawless by 2020
You've probably seen their new lids!
(SPOT.ph) 2018 is the year of realizing that plastic isn't actually fantastic. For one, more than a billion pounds of trash get thrown in the ocean every year, which endangers marine life. While there are lots of ways we can lessen our waste and help Mother Earth breathe a little better, it's nice to know that there are companies doing their part in reducing trash, especially plastic. Looks like that includes Starbucks: They announced on July 9 that they are planning to go strawless in all stores worldwide by 2020.
The new lid on the Cold Foam Iced Espresso
CNN reports that this move will help Starbucks eliminate the billion plastic straws they consume yearly; we can almost hear our oceans breathe a sigh of relief! To do this, Starbucks has been introducing flat lids with a raised lip—almost like an adult sippy cup—to eliminate the need for straws. They've been rolling out this change slowly; locally, Starbucks has started serving their Cold Foam Iced Espresso with this new lid.
Soon, all drinks will feature the new lid
Aside from the special lid, Starbucks Philippines shares in an email interview with SPOT.ph that they've recently introduced compostable straws in all branches, and are working to eliminate plastic utensils, too. "We understand and value the importance of environmental sustainability, and are working to provide sustainable packaging alternatives for our customers," shares Starbucks. "We are [also] inviting customers to skip the straw and disposable utensils with their purchase." With a bill aimed at eliminating all single-use plasticware from restaurants and chains also currently in the works, we're at least a step closer to becoming less dependent on plastic.
