Liz Uy is known as a celebrity stylist and a former fashion editor, but before all the glitz and glamor, she was once a young kid who spent her time baking in the kitchen. Fast forward to today: Uy recently put up her own cookie business, Mood Bake. She called it as such because she only baked when she was in the mood to spend time in the kitchen. But now, she admits to being always in the mood to whip up a batch of freshly baked cookies.
She started with Milo chocolate balls. "[I was] thinking I was baking when really, I was just rolling Milo with milk," she shares. Uy would also spend afternoons watching how their house helps made leche flan,
She took up Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Manila. During her college days, she would always cook, or as she puts it, "try to cook and follow recipes on the back of pancake boxes."
In December 2016, she rediscovered her love for cooking and baking. She decided to take courses at the Center For Asian Culinary Studies, with mentors like Chef Gene Gonzalez and Chef Jun de Guzman.
For now, the only kind of cookie baking at the Mood Bake HQ is their signature Mood Bake: Chunky Chocolate Chip Cookies (P990/box of 10; P990/two boxes of five). On the outside, these cookies have a golden-brown and slightly crunchy edge, plus it's studded with a lot of chocolate chips (Yey, for home bakers who don't scrimp on chocolate!). But the insides are a different story and a cookie-dough fan's dream: Thick and chewy with a sweet center. And because they deliver these freshly baked, you'll bite into warm ooey-gooey chocolatey bits!
In March, Uy will have a pop-up in Manila where she'll launch new flavors, so keep your eyes peeled for updates. Even though her favorite childhood cookies include Oreos with a thick filling, it's with her cookie journey with Mood Bake that made her dream cookie come to life: "Chocolatey, ooey-gooey in the center, fluffy, golden-brown outside, dream-like cookie. I made my dream come true!"
