Turns Out Reno Liver Spread Isn't FDA Registered And Now Pinoys Have So Many Questions

Fans of the liver spread are looking for an explanation.

(SPOT.ph) You know the classic pairing of hot pan de sal and a generous amount of liver spread? Well, you might be in for a shock if this is one of your go-tos. Reno Liver Spread, which practically every Pinoy knows, isn't registered with the Food and Drug Administration. The familiar blue and yellow can, which has been around since 1958, popped up on a Facebook advisory from the regulatory body on September 16.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put up the warning to keep people from buying and of course, consuming unregistered products—including Reno Liver Spread. According to their advisory, the agency verified through "online monitoring" or "post-marketing surveillance" that the products are unregistered and have not been issued a Certificate of Product Registration. Other food supplements and products on the list are Miracle White Advance Whitening Capsules Food Supplement, Turcumin 100% Natural & Standardized Turmeric Curcumin, Desa Spanish Style Bangus in Corn Oil, and Samantha's Dip and Sauce Spanish Sardines Paste Sauce.

Naturally, the news came as a shock to Pinoys. After all, who can recall a time when these blue and yellow cans weren't lined up on grocery and sari-sari store shelves everywhere? The agency also noted that since these products did not go through the proper evaluation, they "cannot assure its quality and safety." Following Republic Act No. 9711, or the Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009, the "manufacture, importation, exportation, sale, offering for sale, distribution, transfer, non-consumer use, promotion, advertising, or sponsorship of health products without the proper authorization is prohibited."
