Top 10 Tunes That Gave Us Last Song Syndrome in 2009
SPOT.ph lists down the top 10 songs we couldn't get out of our heads this year.
You have no idea how it happens–one minute you're intrigued by a song, the next minute you're tapping to it, humming to it, then singing it, endlessly. Last Song Syndrome (LSS) is so highly contagious, it can commandeer your brain wherever you are–at the mall, at work, at home, and especially during your daily commute. Whether you like it or not, you find yourself singing certain lyrics over and over again. Here are the top 10 ditties we just couldn't get out of our minds this year: "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)" by Beyonce
With its catchy lyrics and remarkable choreography, it's not surprising that "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)" kept us singing–and dancing as if we were in black leotards and heels. Inspiring innumerable imitators, it has crossed over to all age groups and genders. Even Justin Timberlake, Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers and little tween Filipino boys on YouTube were dancing it.
"Poker Face" by Lady Gaga "Poker Face" was an ace of a track that propelled Lady Gaga to worldwide success. Playing her cards right, Lady Gaga produced an infectious, fantastic song with bombastic beats and relentless hooks. The song is so incessantly catchy, even stank-faced poker players wouldn't be able to resist bursting into song. Most LSS-able line: "Can't read my, can't read my, no you can't read my poker face!"
"Patron Tequila" by Paradiso Girls feat. Lil Jon & Eve With members of the group hailing from Barbados, England, France, the United States and even the Philippines, the Paradiso Girls form a United Nations girl-group, with the goal of world domination. This song was probably step one. Most LSS-able lines: "I'm on Patron tequila, I'm drunk of margarita, That Patron tequila, me and my mamacita"
"Fire" by 2NE1 Whether we understand the lyrics or not, 2NE1's debut single was one fiery song that was unavoidable. Plus, who can't help but be intrigued after hearing that Sandara Park is part of the group that sang it? Most LSS-able line: "Eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh 2NE1"
"Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny)" by Pussycat Dolls feat. A. R. Rahman As soon as you hear the drumbeats and the slick sitar style, the deal is done–you're in for LSS. Sampling the catchiest song from the year's Best Picture Oscar winner was an ingenious move by the Dolls. Most LSS-able lines: "(Jai ho) You are the reason that I breathe, you are the reason that I still believe, you are my destiny…jai ho."
"I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz It's got simple but great lyrics and an easy-to-sing melody, so you'd be excused for singing it again and again. It doesn't hurt that it always makes us picture the beach, either. Most LSS-able lines: "I won't hesitate, no more, no more. It cannot wait, I'm yours."
"You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift Unless you're a tween, you probably wouldn't be caught dead listening to this on your iPod, but we'll bet you've even caught more than a few male co-workers secretly listening to Taylor Swift–we know we have. Most LSS-able lines: "If you could see that I'm the one who understands you, been here all along so why can't you see? You belong with me, you belong with me."
"Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus This song is a guilty pleasure. How many times have we "nodded our head like yeah and moved our hips like yeah" to this song? It was so popular, it even sparked a local version, "Party in Manila Bay." Most LSS-able lines: "So I put my hands up, they're playing my song, the butterflies fly away, nodding my head like yeah, moving my hips like yeah, I got my hands up, they're playing my song, I know I'm gonna be okay, yeah-eah-e-ah-e-ah. It's a party in the USA, yeah-ah-e-ah-e-ah. It's a party in the USA."
"I Got a Feeling" by Black Eyed Peas The year's most feel-good LSS song. With a pop-throbbing beat, the song's message is simple: "Tonight's gonna be a good night." With this playing, it doesn't seem so impossible. Most LSS-able lines: "I got a feeling... (Woohoo), that tonight's gonna be a good night, that tonight's gonna be a good night, that tonight's gonna be a good good night."
"Nobody" by Wondergirls Let's face it, this year's ultimate LSS song is one we don't even really understand, save for one or two lines. Prepare to see more than your fair share of dance numbers with the clap-clap-point move at this year's Christmas parties. Hey, even the dancing inmates in Cebu have done it. Most LSS-able line: "I want nobody, nobody but chooo!" SPOT.ph wants to know: What are your top LSS songs for 2009?
