10 Tips From Taylor Swift on How to Rule in Life
Whatever problem you encounter, Taylor will have the answer.
(SPOT.ph) Take it from Tay-tay. Shake off the haters and the fakers. Just be yourself, awkward dancing and clumsiness, and all. We love her latest single, "Shake It Off," but this is hardly the first time the Grammy winner has preached her views of the world. Whether it’s about life or love, Taylor Swift has the answer. Here are other pieces of wisdom we’ve picked up from her songs.
1. Bullies will get their comeuppance.
Song: "Mean" from Speak Now (2010)
"Someday I’ll be living in a big ol’ city and all you’re ever gonna be is mean. Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me and all you’re ever gonna be is mean. Why you gotta be so mean?"
Wisdom: Whether that bully is an older third-grader who threw spitballs at you or the boss who likes his power trips, they will get what they deserve someday. What they’re doing will only make you stronger in the end.
2. Even the prettiest person has insecurities.
Song: "Tied Together with A Smile" from Taylor Swift (2006)
"No one knows that you cry, but you don’t tell anyone; that you might not be the golden one. And you’re tied together with a smile, but you’re coming undone."
Wisdom: Taylor wrote this song when she learned about a friend’s problem with bulimia. We all need a confidence boost every now and then. We don’t have to hide it because Taylor understands. She’s been there and she’ll help you get through your insecurities. The message is simple: feel good about yourself.
3. Love is a tough game worth playing.
Song: "State of Grace" from Red (2012)
"Love is a ruthless game...Unless you play it good and right."
Wisdom: Loving someone is a rough sport. Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you trip, sometimes the fight brings out the worst in you (that’s what happens with passion). You just have to decide whether it’s worth fighting for.
4. But sometimes, that game has to end.
Song: "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" from Red (2012)
"I just... I mean this is exhausting, you know, like...We are never getting back together. Like, ever"
Wisdom: It’s pretty amusing that Taylor sings about fighting for love and leaving it behind in the same album. She pretty much sums life up in a few songs. Anyway, always remember: sometimes, fighting for love leaves you so exhausted that you just have to take a break to become more productive (for yourself, for the relationship, for everybody else) in the end. It’s, like, exercise, you know?
5. Sleep is good.
Song (sung with The Civil Wars): "Safe and Sound" from The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond (2012)
"Just close your eyes, you’ll be all right. Come morning light, you and I’ll be safe and sound..."
Wisdom: You can take this literally, metaphorically, philosophically. It speaks the truth, however you see it. A good night’s sleep will always make the day ahead clearer.
6. A mother’s love knows no end.
Song: "Ronan," first performed at the Stand Up to Cancer event in 2012
"Come on baby with me, we’re gonna fly away from here...Out of this curtained room in this hospital grey, we’ll just disappear."
Wisdom: "Ronan" was actually written about Ronan Thompson, a four-year-old who died from cancer in 2011. Taylor composed it after reading his story through his mother, Maya’s blog. The song is about love, grief, and pain-a strong mix of which we all have to face when we lose a loved one.
7. Youth is the time for making mistakes.
Song: "Fifteen" from Fearless (2008)
"I’ve found time can heal most anything; and you just might find who you’re supposed to be."
Wisdom: This song is about a 15-year-old who gave up her virginity for a love that turned out to be a farce. It may seem like the end of the world, but it's not. You're young, you will always be new at life; learning about it comes with a lot of slip-ups. You have your whole life to make up for them.
8. Fortune will come at the right time.
Song: "Change" from Fearless (2008)
"These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down. This revolution, the time will come for us to finally win. We sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah"
Wisdom: It may seem like nothing’s happening in your life, but at the right time, with patience and determination, everything will change.
9. Constant vigilance always helps.
Song: "Eyes Open" from The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond (2012)
"Everybody’s waiting for you to breakdown. Everybody’s watching to see the fallout. Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping, keep your eyes open."
Wisdom: It’s probably one of Taylor’s darker songs, but we like how she doesn’t sugarcoat reality. In a world of desperation, people will watch for your weaknesses and pounce on them. Sometimes it’s your ruthless colleague, sometimes it’s a pickpocket. Always be on your guard because life is about survival.
10. Youth is a state of mind!
Song: "22" from Red (2012)
"We’re happy, free, confused, and lonely in the best way. It’s miserable and magical."
Wisdom: Taylor wrote this when she was turning 23. Age is only a number after all. If you're feeling 22, go ahead and act 22.
