( First was the groundbreaking and Golden Globe award-winning series Transparent. Then came the announcements of a string of new TV series, including one directed by Woody Allen. Now, Amazon Studios is setting their sights on a much bigger screen.

Amazon Studios has announced that it will begin acquiring and producing movies for theatrical release, aiming for as much as 12 films per year. The movies will then be made available via online streaming on Amazon Prime Instant Video in the U.S. about four to eight weeks after their theatrical debuts.

Amazon Studios Vice President Roy Price hopes these movies will benefit both the audience and filmmakers, "who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience."

According to a statement, Amazon Original Movies will focus on "unique stories, voices and characters from up-and-coming creators." There’s still no definite word on their scheduled film lineup, but production is set to begin later this year. Hey, we’re always up for some new movies.
