One Direction Singer Liam Payne Dies at 31

(SPOT.ph) Singer Liam Payne, a member of the five-piece boyband One Direction, was reported dead on October 16, 2024. He was 31.

According to The Associated Press, Buenos Aires police confirmed that Payne fell from his room's balcony on the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel. Medics arrived at the Argentine hotel, confirming his death on the spot.

Initially, police received reports of an "aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol." Pablo Policicchio, the spokesperson for the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires municipality, said in a statement to The Associated Press that Payne “had thrown himself from the balcony of his room.”

Upon arriving, local police "heard a thud" and found Payne's body in the hotel courtyard, Policicchio said.

However, Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, said on Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that investigations were still underway. With results of an autopsy still pending, Crescenti declined to answer further questions.

Former bandmate Niall Horan was in Argentina earlier this month for a solo concert, which Payne attended.

Payne is survived by his 7-year old son Bear Grey Payne with former girlfriend, Cheryl, who was known as musician Cheryl Cole back when she was still perfoming with Girls Aloud. Payne is also survived by his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne, and two older sisters, Ruth and Nicola.

Liam Payne in One Direction

Liam James Payne was born in Wolverhampton, England, on August 29, 1993. He was first seen on television in 2008 as a competitor on the British singing competition The X Factor, but was cut from the show for being too young, at just age 14. Judge Simon Cowell told him to audition once more once he was a bit older.

Payne came back two years later. He made up one fifth of boy band One Direction, which was formed in 2010 after he, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Horan each auditioned individually for The X Factor. Despite failing to advance as solo acts, judge Nicole Scherzinger saw their potential as a group and later became one of most successful boy band's in music history.

The band went on to release certified hits, like their debut song "What Makes You Beautiful," "Live While We're Young," "Little Things," "Best Song Ever," "Steal My Girl," and "Night Changes."

Following the release of their latest singles "Drag Me Down" and "Perfect," the band would go on an indefinite hiatus after the departure of Malik, six years after the band came out swinging. Payne would go on to sing some of his parts.

Payne is credited as one of the principal songwriters of the band.

Payne was no stranger to individual collaborations and production work while he was a member of One Direction, but it was in 2017 when he released his first single as a solo artist. "Strip That Down" featured Quavo and was co-written with Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac, and was released on May 19, 2017.

In 2023, Payne said he was working on his second album, a piece of work that allowed him more creative freedom compared to his debut album. He had plans of going on tour as well, but those were postponed due to a kidney infection. He later released a single titled "Teardrops" on March 1, 2024, which was co-written with NSYNC member JC Chasez.
