Behind the scenes at the Men's Health cover shoot.
It's been four years since Gerald Anderson's Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) stint that catapulted him into showbiz superstardom. Now 21, he has transformed himself from lanky teenage heartthrob to one of the country's bankable leading men. He rose to fame through Filipino teleseryes, Sana Maulit Muli, My Girl, Tayong Dalawa and his current show, Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo.
In Men's Health Philippines' 5th anniversary issue this month, Gerald bravely hung harness-free on rails high above the ground and hopped on walls. These stunts are somehow similar to how he is with his life and career: go-getter and risk taker. After PBB Teen Edition, the actor admits to being carried away at first by fame. He seemed content playing one teenybopper role to another. But last year, when he was asked to play a soldier in the teleserye Tayong Dalawa, he realized that it was time to become a more mature and serious actor. This shift of mindset led him to gaining more muscle and becoming more fit.
Gerald talks to SPOT.ph about his fitness routine, career and on-screen partner Kim Chiu:
What's your favorite workout?
Cardio pero of course I have to go to the gym to pump up my muscles. But I always do cardio first.
How often do you go to the gym?
May gym ako sa bahay, so whenever my schedule's free, I go to the gym.
How do you motivate yourself to work out?
Gusto ko pang dumami [ang mga projects ko] kaya I wanna be healthy and fit. It helps na mahilig talaga ako sa sports.
When did you decide to become fit?
(laughs)
Do you and Kim work out together?
Umm once, sabay kaming nag-gym tapos after that ayaw na ni Kim. (laughs)
She's so thin.
She does [eat]! She's just blessed with a fast metabolism.
Why do you think your love team works?
Coming from PBB which is a reality show, siguro nakita ng tao kung paano kami sa totoong buhay. Siguro nung lumabas kami nakita nila na 'di kami fake.
How do you de-stress?
I play basketball. I try to play regularly.
What's on your bedside table?
Men's Health magazine, 'di joke lang. (laughs) Meron talaga ako sa bahay!
Lucky Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz played gay roles in In My Life. Do you think playing a gay role is an actor's ultimate challenge?
Of course it is! Especially for a straight actor to play [a gay character]. Iba siya sa pagganap sa isang sundalo. Mahirap kasi, you'll have to know how to look at other guys, pa'no ka sa mga babae, pa'no ka magsalita, pa'no ka gagalaw. Mahirap talaga.
Some of your colleagues have gone indie. Would you?
If ever, what would be your dream role?
I can't think of any right now, kasi 'yung dream role ko nagawa ko na. Dream role ko talaga 'yung sundalo.
What personal goals do you want to attain in showbiz?
Kahit papa'no naman, gusto kong makilala ako bilang Gerald. Gusto kong makilala as a person and as a good actor.
Who do you look up to in showbiz?
Local? Si Piolo Pascual at John Lloyd Cruz. Sila talaga ang tinitingala naming kabataan pero hindi ibig sabihin matanda na sila. (laughs)
