Ana Cruz Kayne, Supreme Court Justice Barbie wears a terno in the movie
You probably saw all the buzz about Kayne sporting terno-style outfits to the world premiere in Hollywood and the London premiere. In the first, she turned heads by donning a fittingly bright pink and bejeweled camisa designed by Dennis Lustico. She paired the top with a long fringe skirt from French luxury brand Hervé Léger. In the UK, she opted for another butterfly-sleeve look also from Dennis Lustico, this time in a more neutral shade with delicate leaf embellishments. Both outfits were a clear representation of her heritage, and no, that didn't stop on the pink carpet.

Kayne brings the butterfly sleeves into the movie as well, and at the risk of spoilers, dons it during a pivotal scene, cementing just how much this outfit and its symbolism means. The terno comes complete with butterfly sleeves and even what looks like capiz shell jewelry. Her wearing the dress during such an important part of the movie, "felt like I was honoring my family" the star said in an interview with The Messenger.
"I don't know how they came up with it so fast, but it felt so special and so unique to my Barbie," Kayne says, referring to the movie's costume-design team as led Jacqueline Durran. "And so that was my favorite outfit, I would say my favorite part of Barbie."
She gave folks a peek at the said dress via a picture she posted to her Instagram. Just look at the power poses all the Barbies are giving.
"Seeing yourself represented in mainstream pop culture, it changes your self-worth," Kayne says. "And so, I think that this particular movie and this rebranding of Barbie really is so effective and I think will be very meaningful to anyone who plays with this doll."
Kayne is of Filipino and Jewish descent. Her mother is Pinoy, while her family reportedly has roots in Bulacan. She also starred in another Greta Gerwig film, Little Women, and was in Netflix's Partner Track.
Barbie is now screening in Philippine cinemas.
