PH's Oscars Entry Iti Mapukpukaw Is Back on the Big Screen After Cinemalaya Win
You have a whole week to catch it at this micro-cinema.
(SPOT.ph) In August, Iti Mapukpukaw made history as Cinemalaya’s first full-length animation film. That was only the beginning: It won Best Film at Cinemalaya and went on to be chosen as the Philippines’ official entry to the prestigious Best International Film Category of the 96th Academy Awards in 2024.
Now the Cinemalaya hit is about to hit theaters once again—this time at Cinema ‘76 in Tomas Morato. Iti Mapukpukaw will have one to two screenings per day from Tuesday, October 24 to next Tuesday, October 31. The movie runs at one hour and 30 minutes, with subtitles in English if you're not the best at Tagalog and Ilocano.
Iti Mapukpukaw's plot follows a mouthless young animator (Carlo Aquino), whose life unravels after the death of an uncle and the arrival of a familiar alien that wants to take him. Not following? Director and writer Carl Joseph Papa explained in an interview with SPOT.ph that it explores “the effects of trauma to people and how it can affect one’s day-to-day living.”
What better way to post-process the movie than with a Q&A session with the film crew themselves? This will happen after the 5:30 p.m. screening on Monday, October 30.
Adding to its accolades, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon, who plays Rosalinda in the film, was named Best Supporting Actress at Cinemalaya.
