Must-Watch Movies This September 2024

(SPOT.ph) The -ber months are officially here. It's crazy how time flies, we swear we were just writing about the new releases at the start of the year. Welcome the start of the world's longest Christmas with a dash of horror, a sprinkling of comedy, and lots of action. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Release date: September 4

The Deetz family are back home at Winter River, 36 years after the events of Beetlejuice and the unexpected death of real estate agent Charles Deetz. Michael Keaton is back as Betelgeuse, joined by a star-studded cast comprised of Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe to bring comedy and horror to the Tim Burton-directed film.

Speak No Evil

Release date: September 11

Based on the 2022 Danish film of the same name co-written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup, Speak No Evil is a 2024 remake that stars James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough, Scoot McNairy in psychological thriller flick. A couple is whisked away on a dream holiday in beautiful country home that quickly spirals into a living nightmare.  

Transformers One

Release date: September 18

Giant robots and an emotive cast of human actors racing against time to beat the villain are what come to mind when you think of Transformers, and while you're getting something similar with Transformers One, it's got one marked difference: It's an animated film. It's the franchise's first theatrical animated feature film since The Transformers: The Movie released in 1986, and you can bet technology has taken animation to new heights since then.

Transformers One is set on planet Cybertron and goes way back to unravel the origin story and history of the Transformers race, zeroing in on the relationship between workers Orion Pax and D-16 as they go from comrades to eventual archenemis Optimus Prime and Megatron. Actors Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm are lending their voices to the film.

Taklee Genesis: Worlds Collide

Release date: September 18

During the Vietnam War, the U.S. Armed Forces constructed a Radio Research Field Station at Ramasun Camp, believed to be a test site for the warp-speed teleporter named Taklee Genesis. Single mother Stella returns to her hometown Ban Don Hai at the request of childhood friend Ith to take care of her critically ill mother, decades after testifying that her father mysteriously disappeared in a forbidden forest. Stella receives a call from her supposedly missing father requesting her to bring him back.

Coraline

Release date: September 18

Time flies like crazy because we swear Coraline was released just recently. The 2009 dark fantasy based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 novella has become a cult classic and you'll have your chance to see it on the big screen again. Coraline is celebrating its 15th anniversary by releasing a remastered version this year. The 2009 stop-motion picture will be available to watch until September 30 at Robinsons Movieworld cinemas nationwide.

Coraline follows eponymous character Coraline Jones (voiced by Dakota Fanning) who discovers a secret door in her family's new home that leads to an alternate version of her life. The alternate reality seems better at first, but perils await young Coraline. Though often labelled as kids movie because of its stop-motion animation format, the film is fearless in unravelling themes of self-discovery, complicated family relationships, and escapism.

Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In

Release date: September 25

This Hong Kong neo-noir film directed by Soi Cheang is set in the 1980s and follows troubled youth and mainlander Chan Lok-kwun, who accidentally makes his way into the Walled City and find himself in the company of Shin, Twelfth Master, and AV. Not everything is as it seems in Kowloon, with Lok-kwun paying the price and making sacrifices just to survive. With Cyclone as the gang's leader, they hold their ground against bad guy Mr. Big in a series of action-packed sequences, all for the safety of Kowloon.

In case you didn't know, the film has been in development since the 2000s, but production only started in November 2021, finally wrapped up in April 2022, and was released in May 2024 to become the second-highest-grossing domestic of all time in Hong Kong. It also made it to the Official Selection of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with critical acclaim. With history and achievements that grand, we're excited to see this one on the big screen.

USHER: RENDEZVOUS IN PARIS

Release date: September 12

Usher fans, here's your chance to catch the popstar's performances in cinemas. The R&B and pop music artist performs his hits "Yeah!," "My Boo," "Love in This Club," and more hits in this concert film that pays homage to his roots and celebrates his career. It will only be in cinemas from September 12 to September 15 worldwide, so be sure to mark your calendars lest you miss out!
