MTRCB summons It's Showtime over Pastillas Girl segment
This comes after a complaint filed by Gabriela.
(SPOT.ph) The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has summoned It’s Showtime executives over the show's Pastillas Girl segment entitled "Nasaan Ka Mr. Pastillas."
The segment features Pastillas Girl (a.k.a. Angelica Yap) and her search for a potential boyfriend after she was dumped. Since its debut, the show has introduced her to new suitors, set her up on dates, and even brought in her ex-boyfriend for a dramatic confrontation on national TV.
In a letter dated October 1, the MTRCB summoned top executives of the show for a meeting on "gender sensitivity concerns," set for October 13. The letter cited a 2012 memorandum that requires all TV networks to have a "positive and non-derogatory portrayal of women in television, in support of Magna Carta of Women 2009." The letter was in response to "feedback from the general public" as well as a complaint filed by women's group Gabriela.
Earlier, Pastillas Girl's mother went on the show to defend her daughter from critics, saying, "'Yong sinasabi nila na binubugaw ko 'yong anak ko, hindi nila alam kung gaano ko kamahal 'yong anak ko. Hindi ko kayang gawin 'yon."
The segment was introduced by the show to rival Eat Bulaga's successful KalyeSerye segment featuring AlDub. Although Pastillas Girl has increased Showtime's ratings, it still falls behind its competition. Fans of the show weren't happy with the change: in September, they bombarded Vice Ganda's Instagram account with demands to bring the old format back and get rid of the Pastillas Girl segment.
