Hit U.S. show depicts American Secretary of State punching PH president
Sly dig or just an interesting plot point?
(SPOT.ph) Pinoys are always excited whenever the country somehow ends up on international TV, be it a reality singing competition or even just a casual mention. In the case of CBS Network's Madam Secretary, however, the reaction might not be as enthusiastic.
A new promo clip features U.S. Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) in Malacañang in the hopes of forging an important treaty with the fictional Philippine president, Datu Andrada (Joel de la Fuente).
The U.S. diplomat initially laughs off his inappropriate advances until he goes too far, and she ends up punching him in the face. The clip also hints at a plot point where McCord could expose Andrada's uncomfortable advances.
The promo trailer has spread like wildfire and has already made its way to the real Palace. "In view of the injurious effects that this program will have on the interests of the Philippines and the Filipino people, the Philippine Embassy urgently calls on CBS to take the necessary corrective actions," said the Philippine embassy in Washington in a statement. "This highly negative portrayal of our Head of State not only casts doubt on the respectability of the Office of the Philippine President but also denigrates the way our nation navigates foreign affairs. It also tarnishes the Philippines' longstanding [sic] advocacy for women's rights and gender equality."
The episode is slated to air on March 12. You can bet we want to watch.
Madam Secretary airs on Mondays on Sony Channel Asia.
