(SPOT.ph) Avid movie fans will likely recognize Mike de Leon, whose name is attached to some of the greatest Filipino films of all time (including Kisapmata and Batch '81). His next project—over 15 years since his last movie—features an equally familiar name, but in an entirely different field.
It was announced in November 2016 that journalist Atom Araullo will be starring in de Leon's comeback project entitled Citizen Jake. In a report by Inquirer.net, the film is reportedly an "investigative crime story with political overtones."
In an exclusive chat with SPOT.ph, Araullo dished on his first acting role, where he would be playing a fictional journalist and the titular character. "People say it would be easier for me to portray the role because I’m a journalist in real life. I’m sure they’re right, but it certainly doesn’t feel that way," he says. "I share a lot of similarities with the main character, but he’s an entirely different person. Having said that, I identify with Jake’s doggedness and faith in the power of stories."
Although he didn't give any further plot details, he confirmed that he was collaborating with de Leon and writer Noel Pascual on the script. "[I've been] very involved. Mike, Noel, and I have been meeting regularly since November last year. The story has evolved considerably over that time."
A release date has yet to be announced, but we do know the film will also feature the acting talents of Luis Alandy, Cherie Gil, Gabby Eigenmann, and Teroy Guzman (above).
