Vic Sotto and Vice Ganda are officially back in the MMFF

Well, it was good while it lasted.

( By now, it's pretty obvious that it's not the Metro Manila Film Festival without some form of controversy. And although we're only halfway through 2017, the MMFF has once again raised some eyebrows with the return of its long-time mainstays, Vic Sotto and Vice Ganda.

According to a post on the official MMFF Facebook page, the first four official entries are based on script submission, namely:

Ang Panday

Directed by: Rodel Nacianceno

Stars: Coco Martin

Almost Is Not Enough

Directed by: Dan Villegas

Stars: Jericho Rosales and Jennylyn Mercado

The Revengers

Directed by: Joyce Bernal

Stars: Vice Ganda, Daniel Padilla, and Pia Wurtzbach

LOVE TRAPS #Family Goals

Directed by: Antonio Y. Reyes

Stars: Vic Sotto and Dawn Zulueta

In the same Facebook post, MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said that the new scheme of script submissions and finished film submissions will ensure "no discrimination will arise amongst commercial and the so-called 'indie' films." All entries were judged based on the following criteria: 40% artistic excellence; 40% commercial appeal; 10% promotion of Filipino cultural and historical values, and 10% global appeal.

The 2016 edition of the festival was mostly composed of non-commercial entries, which was met by praise by audiences and filmmakers who were rallying for change, as well as criticism from MMFF staples like Vice Ganda, Vic Sotto, Tito Sotto, and Mother Lily Monteverde.

So far, the announcement has been met with criticism on social media. A previous interview with filmmaker Erik Matti (who famously rallied against the MMFF in 2015) sums up their concern nicely:

"[Only accepting finished films as entries] helps the industry. Because that's the only way you can judge a film. When it's just a script, it leaves your work open to interpretation. What you like on paper may not be the same when it's shot. A film can only be judged when you see a film, not the script."

The announcement of finished film submissions will be on November 17.
