Die Beautiful and Kita Kita Were Considered for Submission to the 2018 Oscars
Birdshot had some tough competition.
(SPOT.ph) By now, you've probably already heard of Birdshot being selected as the Philippines' official entry to the 2018 Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film category. It turns out that it had some pretty tough competition.
According to a report by Variety, there were nine films vying for submission, namely: Die Beautiful by Jun Lana; 1st Sem by Dexter Hernandez and Allan Ibanez; Ang Araw sa Likod Mo by Dominic Nuesa; Kita Kita by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo; Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B by Prime Cruz; Patay na si Hesus by Victor Villanueva; Triptiko by Miguel Franco Micelena; and MMFF 2016 Best Picture winner Sunday Beauty Queen by Baby Ruth Villarama.
The voting committee of the Film Academy of the Philippines was evenly split between Birdshot and Sunday Beauty Queen, which then required chairman Jose N. Carreon to cast a vote. The committee includes Film Development Council of the Philippines Chair Liza Dino-Seguerra, actress Gina Alajar, and film professor Rolando Tolentino.
So far, no Filipino film has ever made it to the shortlist of nine titles (which will eventually be whittled down to a final five).
