Piolo Pascual Shares His Plans to Produce a Film About War-torn Marawi

The proceeds of the film will go to housing programs in the area.

(SPOT.ph) From a documentary-film about the SAF 44 to a short film about the Marawi siege made by a soldier, more and more films have been tackling real-life battles that happened in the Philippines. Adding to the list of films would be one helmed by Piolo Pascual, Director Joyce Bernal, and Robin Padilla. All three recently concluded a trip to the war-torn area.

Pascual reveals that the eeriness of the place inspired him to create a film about it. “Yung tipong, 'Totoo bang nangyari sa 'tin 'to?' And I think what’s important is we cannot turn a blind eye anymore with what has happened in our country. I think it’s important for us to be involved,” he explains in a report by PEP.

He also wants the project to be a way for Filipinos to help each other during a time of need. “It’s important for us to be aware doon sa nangyari para hindi na mangyari uli, para makatulong tayo, para malaman ng mga tao na iisang bayan tayo, hindi tayo divided by religion. Puwede nating gawin yung platform natin para we can raise awareness para may makatulong pa.” But, he says, this unity isn’t what’s happening, saying, “Ang nangyari, natapos na ang war, a lot of people are displaced, a lot of people don’t have their homes back, and sana huwag tayong tumigil, sana gumawa tayo ng aksyon.

This is why he, along with Bernal and Padilla, is planning on making a film that will raise funds for the housing projects in Marawi. He reveals that the purpose of their visit to the area earlier this January was so they can check where they are allowed to shoot, since the area is still being rehabilitated and there are still bombs that haven't been detonated yet.

The script is still in the works, so there are still no castings being made. But they already have a plan for what they’ll do with the movie’s earnings. “Coming up with the film with an advocacy, lahat kami dito pro-bono. From the producers to everyone, and then whatever proceeds we’re gonna get, para yun sa tulong, para sa housing ng Marawi,” he reveals.
