10 Date-Friendly Cinemas in Manila
Because movie night is always a good idea.
(SPOT.ph) There are a lot of things you can do around the Metro for a romantic night out with your significant other. Still, there’s nothing quite like a movie date to help bring on that thrill you get when you're with someone you like. Watching the latest blockbuster hit might seem like a simple date idea—but with the right place (and hopefully the right person), you might just have more movie dates to mark on your calendar. So, we list down 10 places where you can take your S.O. (or potential S.O.)—because picking out a movie place doesn’t have to be as complicated as your relationship status.
Newport Mall Ultra Cinema 1
4/F Newport Mall, 1309 Newport Boulevard, Newport, Pasay City
Price: P500 to P560
The cozy recliner seats (that go all the way down, btw) at Newport Mall's Ultra Cinema 1 will make you turn away from watching movies with your laptop on your chest forever. The seats that come with USB ports for charging are semi-enclosed, too (so you don’t have to worry about people seeing you awkwardly reaching out to hold hands with your date). You can also have all the snacks and drinks you want because each ticket comes with free-flowing popcorn and drinks served by butlers whom you can call with the press of a button! Plus, you can buy tickets through the RWM Mobile companion app, so you can impress your date with how much you planned out your night.
Black Maria Cinema
779 San Rafael Street, Mandaluyong City
Price: P150 to P250
If you’re looking to try something new and different, why not take your date to a microcinema? Black Maria Cinema in Mandaluyong often has screenings of local indie movies and internationally acclaimed films that have already finished their theatrical run, so you can finally watch that film you missed. You also don’t have to worry about where to grab a bite to eat because there’s a café right beside the cinema. They sometimes have screenings beyond midnight, too, so you can stay out for longer if you want to.
Santolan Town Plaza’s Power Plant Cinemas
3/F Santolan Town Plaza, 276 Colonel Bonny Serrano Avenue, San Juan City
Price: P270 to P280
This not-so-secret mall is about to be your new hangout place if you don’t like crowds. It’s also just the place to go if you’re trying to keep things low-key and aren’t really ready for others to see you going out together yet. (We’re not judging—take your time!) Its location in San Juan, near Little Baguio, is a convenient in-between if one of you is from the North and the other’s from the South—or just a great pick in general if you’re both from around the area.
UP Town Center’s 4DX Cinema
3/F UP Town Center, Katipunan Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City
You’ve probably already watched action movies countless times before, but watching it in a 4D cinema like the one in UP Town Center is a different experience altogether. You’ll be fully engaged in the movie as the seats move and vibrate along with the action sequences you see onscreen. There’s even a light spray of mist when there’s a scene with water involved! You can think of it as an amusement-park ride minus the waiting in long lines and the heat. And if you suddenly get surprised by a jump scare, you can cling to your date for some support (*wink wink*) or just laugh about it together.
Cinema '76 Anonas
3/F Anonas LRT City Center, Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City
Price: P200 to P250
Maybe you and your date don’t have all the time in the world to go out for a whole day. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying an after-work date. You can pick up your date from their office and make an adventure out of it: Take the LRT-2 together to the new Cinema '76 Anonas branch located at the LRT City Center, which is directly connected to the Anonas station. Commuting together doesn’t seem all that romantic, but it’s the effort of finding time for each other after work that makes it sweet. And you’ll be rewarded with a screening of your favorite indie movie, too.
SM Megamall’s IMAX Cinema
4/F Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City
With a bowling alley, skating rink, laser-tag arena, archery range, and seemingly countless shops and restaurants to check out, SM Megamall is like a one-stop shop for a whole-day kind of date. You can plan out an entire day full of activities and cap things off with an immersive movie-watching experience at their IMAX Cinema that’ll have you hooked—no matter what movie you’re watching.
95 Maginhawa Street, Diliman, Quezon City
So, you’re talking to your crush and find out that they’re into Filipino movies. What do you do with this potentially relationship-altering information? You ask them if they want to catch this film at Cinema Centenario, because you heard it’s really good. (And it probably is.) Cinema Centenario is conveniently located along Maginhawa, so you can choose from one of the many restaurants that line the street before watching the movie. Or you can also watch the movie then talk about it afterwards over dinner.
S Maison’s Director’s Club
2/F S Maison, Conrad Manila, Seaside Boulevard, Pasay City
Sure, the area around SM Mall of Asia tends to get a little crowded, but S Maison is always a welcome respite from it all. Aside from restaurants you won’t find anywhere else in the Metro (like Epilogue, Plank Sourdough Pizza, and Bijin Nabe), you can also check out The Dessert Museum and take cute couple photos together. S Maison is directly connected to Conrad Hotel, so you can book a room if you’re celebrating an anniversary, watching a concert, or simply just want to treat yourselves to a luxurious staycation.
Bonifacio High Street Cinema 1
4/F Central Square, 35th Avenue corner 30th Street, Bonifacio Global City
Price: P250 to P500
All of the cinemas at Bonifacio High Street (BHS) are fitted with Dolby Atmos surround-sound system, so you know you’ll be in for a treat. There are lots of food options near the cinema, too, so you can enjoy your movie while munching on some snacks. The recliner seats at Cinema 1 are so comfy, you’ll want to book tickets for a movie marathon. The loveseats in the middle section of the cinema are perfect for your not-so-secret hand-holding and snack-sharing. After the movie, you can go out for dinner or just take a walk around BHS and go around the shops.
UP Film Institute’s Videotheque and Cine Adarna
2/F Cine Adarna Building, Magsaysay and Osmena Avenue, University of the Philippines - Diliman, Quezon City
Who says you have to spend a lot for a great date? You can take a stroll around the U.P. Diliman campus, pass by Area 2 (for some isaw, burgers, and fruit shakes), then watch indie films screening for as low as P150 at UP Film Institute’s 60-seater Videotheque and 800-seater Cine Adarna. You might even catch exclusive Q&A forums and meet-and-greet sessions with the cast and crew of the film afterwards, making for an even more special movie date.
