If You Like Stranger Things and Black Mirror, You’ll Enjoy This Disturbing New Thriller
It stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.
(SPOT.ph) The release date of Black Mirror’s next season is yet to be announced and fans are still counting down the days till the Stranger Things gang returns. But in the meantime, they can look forward to a new mind-bending thriller from Netflix. Maniac centers around Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), who are participating in a new (read: sketchy) kind of pharmaceutical trial to try and escape their problems. So, if you're looking for something to make you go, "WTF?!" you won't have to wait that long, because the 10-episode series premieres on September 21.
Maniac's trailer introduces the show's colorful characters: Annie is obsessed with her complicated relationships with her mother and sister, while Owen is struggling with his own problems as one of the sons of a ridiculously rich family. The two strangers sign up for the three-day drug experiment led by Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux). He says he can heal anything that has anything to do with the mind—from heartbreak to any kind of pain. "Pain can be destroyed, the mind can be solved." But when Annie and Owen begin the trial, they quickly learn that the doctor's claims of "no side effects" aren't true.
The series is directed by Cary Fukunaga, who is most known for his work on the first season of True Detective, the 2011 movie adaptation of Jane Eyre, and the critically acclaimed 2015 war film, Beasts of No Nation.
Maniac premieres on September 21.
