Crazy Rich Asians Author Kevin Kwan Thanks the Philippines for Making the Movie Number One
The movie adaptation of his book is now a record-breaker.
(SPOT.ph) By now, you've already heard about the blockbuster hit that is Crazy Rich Asians. Fans of the book, written by Kevin Kwan, have been waiting for the movie ever since it was announced. Pinoy fans practically ran to the cinemas—given that Crazy Rich Asians opened at number one when it premiered in the Philippines on August 22. In just five days, it grossed over P82.7 million at the box office, making it the biggest opening ever for an international romantic comedy.
The story of Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) battling it out with her rich boyfriend Nick Young's (Henry Golding) family is enough to get fans lining up for tickets. But Pinoy fans probably also flocked to the cinemas because of Kris Aquino, who plays Malay royalty Princess Intan, and Filipino-American actor Nico Santos, who plays Nick's cousin, Oliver.
This feat, of course, was not to be missed by Kwan himself. He posted a message of gratitude to the Philippines on his Instagram page. Along with a photo of Aquino's scene in the movie, he says, "Thank you Philippines for making Crazy Rich Asians the no. 1 movie in the country, making it WB's (Warner Bros. Pictures) biggest opening weekend of 2018 and the biggest opening weekend for an English rom-com of all time!!!" He adds, "Thank you for supporting my books from the very beginning! Mahal ko kayo!!!" along with the hashtags #superfans and #gratitude.
Crazy Rich Asians is currently in cinemas.
