This Award-Winning Director's New Crime-Thriller Is Unlike Anything You've Seen Before
Well, for one, it has a music-video teaser.
(SPOT.ph) Director Khavn De La Cruz recently won over critics and audiences alike with his dark film about the horrific 1901 Balangiga massacre, Balangiga: Howling Wilderness. The film won the Circle Competition Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor at the 2017 QCinema International Film Festival. It also won Best Picture at the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences and Gawad Urian Awards. Now, the director is back with another crime-thriller called Bamboo Dogs—only this time, it's not as dark as you probably expect it to be.
The teaser starts out seriously enough, with a character called Korpo (action star Rez Cortez)—short for Corporal—crossing the street and walking into an apartment building. But then you notice the obviously fake wig, and then he starts dancing to an upbeat, '80s-vibe song all over the house. (The song, entitled "Susan," was written and composed by De La Cruz himself.)
Not much of the plot is revealed, but the teaser describes the film as "a crime-thriller retro-road movie based on the Kuratong Baleleng Rubout Massacre of 1995." The Kuratong Baleleng was an organized crime syndicate, whose 11 members died in an alleged shootout with the police along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City. Reports later surfaced that they were actually killed by summary execution.
Bamboo Dogs also stars William Buenavente as Meleubren, Sue Prado as Pulis Corazon, Ron Capinding as Alapaap, Jess Mendoza as Welbor, and Dido De La Paz as Pulis Esquivel. The premiere date of the film is yet to be announced.
