Veronica Mars is a teen mystery drama that revolves around a high-school-then-college student who helps out her detective dad by being a private investigator. The show, which premiered in 2004, lasted three seasons before getting cancelled in 2007.

After the cancellation, the show's creator Rob Thomas wrote a screenplay for a possible feature film but it wasn't funded. In 2013, Thomas and Bell started a fundraiser to be able to make the movie. The film, also called Veronica Mars, eventually premiered at the 2014 South by Southwest Film Festival. It follows Veronica Mars as an aspiring lawyer in New York City. She gets a call from her ex-boyfriend who is being accused for murder and she is brought back to her past life of (amateur) sleuthing.
