Cherie Gil doesn't want Bituing Walang Ningning: The Musical to use her famous line

You're nothing but a second-rate, trying-hard, copycat!

( Fans who love Bituing Walang Ningning would be stoked to hear (and see) its most famous line delivered onstage. Unfortunately, not everyone shares that sentiment.

According to, Cherie Gil isn't too happy about the new musical using her line. Her legal counsel, Atty. Lorna Kapunan, reportedly sent a Cease and Desist letter to Viva Films and Newport Performing Arts Theater management on Friday. Why? Well, it's because Cherie says it's her intellectual property because she originally delivered the dialogue.

There's just one problem, though. Emmanuel Borlaza, director of the film, doesn't think so. He claims that he came up with the line, reportedly with a little help from Tommy Abuel, member of the cast. "Kahit ilibing nila ako bukas nang buhay, ‘yon ang katotohanan," he told PEP.

Should Cherie push through with her case, Borlaza said he is willing to testify for Viva Films.

The film's screenplay was written by the late Orlando Nadrel, and was based on the comics of Nerissa Cabral.
