How Your Favorite Celebrities Get Ready for the Star Magic Ball

It can kind of get crazy!

The Star Magic Ball is one of the most anticipated celebrity events every year. It's where you see the brightest and freshest celebs of ABS-CBN all together, dressed to the nines. Every actress always looks like a princess in their dreamy gowns and stunning makeup—so much so that it's enough to make you wonder how you can cop the same look.

But perfection needs a lot of preparation, especially on the day itself. We asked Mark Kingson QuaNikki Duque, and Nicole Ceballos to explain how the Star Magic ladies get pretty hours before they walk the red carpet.

Mark is responsible for the fresh and flawless faces of Sue RamirezAndrea BrillantesBarbie Imperial, and Elisse Joson. He has been dolling up celebs for the Star Magic Ball for the past five years.

Can you tell us about the process of doing a celebrity's makeup for the Star Magic Ball?

Preparation is key. It only gets crazy if the process, tools, and schedules are not in order. I usually meet with my celebrity clients, along with the whole glam team so we can already identify their desired looks and prepare for it accordingly.

How long does one makeup look usually take to do?

Including makeup, hair, and dressing up, it takes around two hours.

What products do you usually pack in your kit?

I bring everything! It's better to be really prepared on that day.

How do you retouch the makeup looks of celebrities throughout the night?

My celebrity muses retouch by themselves. I usually give them oil blotting papers and some products in small sample jars so they can reapply the colors I used.

Nikki Duque

Nikki is no stranger to events like this because for many years, she has been assisting her mom, seasoned makeup artist Cristine Duque. She got her first solo MUA gig for Star Magic Ball last year with Vickie Rushton, a former PBB housemate.

Can you tell us about the process of doing a celebrity's makeup for the Star Magic Ball?

[It gets] very crazy but fun because the whole glam team is there to make sure that the celebrity's look is spot on. It's all about team effort—we collaborate and bring the best out of each other.

How long does one makeup look usually take to do?

Normally one and a half to two hours, depending on the agreed final makeup and hair look.

What products do you usually pack in your kit?

Everything. From makeup to body makeup, Girl Scout mode on!

How do you retouch the makeup looks of celebrities throughout the night?

I retouch before they leave the room and prior to walking the red carpet. It's also important to use products that are long-wearing.

Nicole Ceballos

A former apprentice of makeup master Jigs Mayuga, she's used to working with tight schedules without sacrificing impeccable results. She has already developed a system to make sure that the client won't feel rushed and her attention to detail assures that the actress will look perfect.

Can you tell us about the process of doing a celebrity's makeup for the Star Magic Ball?

I don't expect the makeup process itself to be too crazy because we will start quite early, around 2 to 3 p.m. or the time we check-in [at] the hotel venue. This allows us to have at least two to four hours preparation time.

Because I've worked with the celebrity that I'll be doing on Star Magic Ball [this year], I already know her features and preference. I've also been taking a lot of screenshots from Pinterest and Instagram for pegs so that we, the stylist, designer, and hairstylist, can all plan the best look for our client.

How long does one makeup look usually take to do?

It usually takes about one to one and a half hours for me to get her makeup done.

What products do you usually pack in your kit?

For events as important as this, I bring practically everything I have even if I already know which are [the] products that I will use. It reduces the anxiety of feeling underprepared. [Overpacking] can be useful if I suddenly think of doing something different on the day itself.

I bring a suitcase filled with a full arsenal of bases (five to six different shades of liquid and cream foundations, powders, and concealers). I also make sure that I have cheek and contour products, seven eyeshadow palettes, a pencil case full of eyeliners and eyebrow products, 10 different styles of false eyelashes, three different pouches of lippies, a bag full of skincare items, and four containers of brushes, and finally, a pan of Bathina(Ed's note: This body balm gives a sexy sheen on the shoulders, collarbones, and legs!) But really, I'd use probably around only 10% of that kit for two celebrities!

How do you retouch the makeup looks of celebrities throughout the night?

Most likely, I won't be able to personally retouch their makeup, so I will just provide them some products (pressed powder, lipstick, blush, and highlighter) they can use to touch up their face. Of course, this will all depend on what can fit inside their bag.
