(SPOT.ph) Gone are the days when beauty queens are only known for being tall, beautiful, and having a figure that can rock both a swimsuit and an evening gown. Today, these gorgeous ladies come from all walks of life, often juggling academics with intense pageant training, volunteering, and even showbiz careers.

Karen Ibasco

Pageant: Miss Earth 2017 (winner)

Degree: Masters in Applied Physics (University of Santo Tomas – Cum Laude)


This 26-year-old college instructor and medical physicist graduated cum laude from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Applied Physics. Although she initially had plans to take up Medicine, she decided to take her Masters instead, which she completed with flying colors!



Anna Theresa Licaros

Pageant: Miss Universe 2007

Degree: Bachelor of Laws (University of the Philippines – Salutatorian)


An impressive student all throughout her life, Anna Theresa Licaros graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Broadcast Communication from UP Diliman. (Her weighted average was reportedly a staggering 1.161!) After failing to land a Top 15 spot in Miss Universe, she dabbled in hosting and showbiz then studied law in UP Diliman, where she graduated salutatorian; in 2012, this amazing lawyer was one of only nine passers of the Foreign Service exams.

Venus Raj

Pageant: Miss Universe 2010 (fourth runner-up)

Degree: Masters in Community Development (University of the Philippines-Diliman)


Venus Raj's humble beginnings are no secret to fans who have followed her rise to Miss Universe. After landing a full scholarship in Bicol University, she graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Journalism. Post-Miss Universe, she worked a few hosting jobs then took a break from showbiz to pursue her Master's degree. She completed her post-graduate education in June 2017. Major, major!

Shamcey Supsup-Lee

Pageant:  Miss Universe 2011 (third runner-up)

Degree: BS Architecture (University of the Philippines-Diliman – Magna Cum Laude)


Equally as impressive is Shamcey Supsup-Lee, who landed in fourth place in 2011. Before she sashayed on the Miss Universe runway, Shamcey was already making waves in UP Diliman. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Architecture then topped the Architect Licensure exams. Today, the mother of one is a TV host, model, and endorser.




Janine Tugonon

Pageant: Miss Universe 2012 (first runner-up)

Degree: BS Pharmacy (University of Santo Tomas – Cum Laude)


Janine Tugonon has been a beauty queen since she was studying Pharmacy in UST, winning crowns in various university-wide pageants. She also juggled pageantry and academics with ballet. She unfortunately didn't win Miss Universe (though she came very close), and instead, went into modeling. So far, the New York-based model has posed nude for Nu Muses, walked in New York Fashion Week, and was cast in a Victoria's Secret PINK ad.

Kylie Verzosa

Pageant: Miss International 2016 (winner)

Degree: BS Business Management (Ateneo de Manila University)


Before wowing judges and audiences during Miss International 2016, Kylie Verzosa worked as a preschool teacher and volunteered for the Natasha Goulbourn Foundation, which aims to raise awareness about mental health. Kylie has always been open about her personal struggle with depression and has used her platform to talk about mental health. Today, she works as a print and commercial model.




Ariella Arida

Pageant: Miss Universe 2013 (third runner-up)

Degree: BS Chemistry (University of the Philippines-Los Baños)


After completing her Chemistry degree in UPLB, Ariella Arida worked as a model and a technical sales executive. She ventured into pageants and landed in fourth place during Miss Universe; later, she tried her hand in modeling and even showbiz. Today, she actively works as a TV host.



Catherine Untalan-Vital

Pageant: Miss Earth-Water 2006 (winner)

Degree: BS Psychology (University of the Philippines-Diliman – Cum Laude)


After winning Miss Earth-Water in 2006, Catherine "Cathy" Untalan received a diploma in Environment and Natural Resource Management from the University of the Philippines Open University. This environmentalist was also appointed spokesperson for various campaigns by the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the United States Agency for International Development. Today, she serves as the Executive Director of the Miss Earth Foundation.

Katarina Rodriguez

Pageant: Binibining Pilipinas-Intercontinental 2017 (winner)

Degree: BS Business Management and AB Philosophy (De La Salle University)



Prior to joining Binibining Pilipinas, Katarina Rodriguez was already a familiar face: She was a VJ for MTV Philippines and more notably, a finalist in Asia's Next Top Model's 2014 cycle. While pursuing a double degree in DLSU, she was varsity captain of the university's track and field team. She also juggled three jobs during her senior year!



Laura Lehmann

Pageant: Miss World 2017

Degree: AB Psychology (Ateneo de Manila University)


Although Laura Lehmann fell short of clinching a spot in the Miss World Top 15, this beauty queen still has plenty going for her. Laura initially had plans to become a doctor and took up Psychology and Neuroscience in the U.S. before finally pursuing AB Psychology in Ateneo. Somewhere along the way, she became a courtside reporter, a TV host for a lifestyle show, and a commercial model.
