Actor Alec Baldwin, star of 30 Rock, joked on The Late Show with David Letterman on May 12 that he was " thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point...or a Russian one," after he said he would love to have more children, a remark that drew the ire of Philippine Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jr. who said today it insulted millions of Filipinos, reports the Huffington Post. The site also quotes Revilla as saying "'Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he'll see mayhem,' using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating." Intrigued by which local idiom was being referred to, we found out from gmanews.tv that Revilla said, "Subukan niyang pumunta dito sa Pilipinas nang maghalo ang balat sa tinalupan."
Meanwhile, says gmanews.tv, Baldwin's joke also enraged lawmaker and women's rights activist Risa Hontiveros, who called his joke "totally foul," said "His comment is already anecdotal evidence of the growing phenomenon of mail-order-brides and the perception of foreigners that those are Filipinas." Jean Enriquez, executive director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women-Asia Pacific, said that "by joking about mail-order brides he is trivializing human smuggling."
