UPDATED: Artists mourn "Death of National Artist Awards" Aug 7 at CCP
The country's artists, led by six prominent National Artists are inviting their supporters to join them in a protest rally on Friday, August 7, 2 to 6 p.m. at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Ramp. The rally will express their indignation over this year's Malacanang-appointed selections for National Artist. Their invite reads:
"Iniimbitahan kayo ng mga National Artists na sina Ben Cabrera, Bien Lumbera, Rio Alma, F. Sionil Jose, Arturo Luz, Salvador Bernal na makilahok sa isang luksang bayan para sa pagpanaw ng makabuluhang National Artist Awards. Pakiusap, panluksang pananamit."
Facebook group administrator, theater actor and director Bart Guingona said the National Artists will read "eulogies" insterspersed with numbers from musicians and singers. There will also be a motorcade and march (depending on the weather) to the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
Today, August 6, the program for tomorrow's rally, a symbolic necrological service for the National Artist Awards, circulated among artists and supporters. Bituin Escalante, will open the program with the singing of the National Anthem, to be followed by messages by National Artists Salvador Bernal and BenCab. Juana Change, is also slated to be part of the rally, with a commentary on the issue entitled, "National Artist na Ako! - Have Mercy on Us!"
The rally will end with a funeral. The e-mail reads: "Ito ay nagsisilbing imbitasyon at maaring ipalaganap sa lahat ng mga nagmamahal sa Sining, Kultura at Katotohanan."
