GMA overspent P1.6B on foreign trips, used national emergency contingency fund

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo spent P2.7 billion on foreign trips from 2003 to 2007, exceeding the P1.1 billion budget. The revelation was made by Bukidnon Congressman Teofisto Guingona III during an interview with a radio station, reports GMANews.TV.

The figures came from a report by the Commission on Audit dated August 12, 2009. Guingona further stated that the Palace paid for the president's additional expenses by taking money from the government's contingency fund for national emergencies.

Guingona added that in 2008, the president spent P722 million on foreign trips in spite of the P244 million budget.

President Arroyo has gone on 80 foreign trips since she became president in 2001. To see the complete report and summary of expenses for each trip, click here.
