Willie Revillame asks ABS-CBN to release him; Wowowee ratings soar with new host Robin Padilla
Original Wowowee host and mega endorser Willie Revillame "humbly [requested] the [ABS-CBN] management to release [him] as a talent of the network" through a letter dated May 12 and addressed to ABS-CBN honchos that was first published by Ricky Lo in his The Philippine Star column today, May 21.
More than two weeks have passed since Revillame went on an indefinite leave from his Wowowee hosting duties following his threat on May 4 to resign if ABS-CBN does not fire TV and radio host Jobert Sucaldito. Revillame claims Sucaldito has been targetting him for about a year now in Sucaldito's radio program on dzMM, ABS-CBN's sister company.
Aside from mentioning health problems, like a heart blockage, due to the long hours he spent developing Wowowee, Revillame stated in his letter, "It is very painful to hear every time my show is the target of unwanted and unnecessary tirades… Is it too much to ask that we be respected for what we do? Is it too much to ask that we be defended from such attacks?"
"My outburst last week during the live presentation of the show is nothing more than a reflection of my frustration over these things, and was not at all meant to disrespect the network and its management… I do not want to cause any further embarrassment to the network. I know that all these have caused so much strain on our relations and I would like to save the situation by asking that I be released as a talent of the station."
Host of the hit noontime show Wowowee for almost five and a half years now, Revillame still has a year and a half left in his contract with ABS-CBN, reports PEP.ph.
Action star Robin Padilla has taken over Revillame's job as a temporary replacement since May 15, reports ABS-CBNNews.com. Though he drew flak over his hosting stint, Wowowee's ratings have gone up since Padilla started hosting.
"Pasensya na po. Marami pa rin po akong pagkakamali. Kapag pinapanood kong mag-isa ang episode, nakikita ko po ang lahat ng pagkakamali ko…Hayaan ninyo po. Pinipilit ko po araw-araw na malagpasan pa kung ano ang nagawa ko noong nakaraang araw. Alam ninyo naman na ako ay [a] man of few words. Akalain mo, ngayon dapat ay maging madaldal [ako]. Iyan ay mahirap," he told ABS-CBNNews.com.
Padilla said the criticisms thrown against him should be respected. "Bilang nagpupumilit na host ng Wowowee, dapat nating ligawan ang tao."
Pages and groups devoted to Padilla as the new Wowowee host have sprouted all over Facebook--some even petition for him to become Wowowee's permanent host. Meanwhile, Revillame has his own share of supporters and haters on Facebook like "OUST WILLIE REVILLAME ON WOWOWEE! WE HATE HIM!" The page has over 145,000 members as of May 21.
