Erap, Binay lead in second day of official canvassing
Former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino lead in the second day of official canvassing of votes yesterday, May 31, reports GMANews.tv.
Presidentiable Estrada got 234,474 votes followed by Manny Villar (217,450) and Noynoy Aquino (205,967). Meanwhile, vice presidential bet Binay received 307,537 votes followed by Loren Legarda (232,986) and Mar Roxas (195, 378).
The count included votes from Northern Luzon provinces. La Union proved to be a gold mine for Estrada and Binay; the province delivered 126,602 for Estrada and 155,160 votes for Binay.
So far, the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) has tallied certificates of canvass (COC) from La Union, Ilocos Norte, Hong Kong and Singapore. Ilocos Sur COCs were not electronically transmitted and thus set aside, as well as the COCs from Baguio and Siquijor because the number of registered voters and nullified votes did not add up.
According to NBOC member, Sen. Miguel Zubiri, an Information Technology expert provided an explanation to the discrepancy but Zubiri pointed out that the expert is from the Department of Science and Technology, not from the Commission on Elections. Since the Comelec and Smartmatic officials had already left the venue, Batasang Pambansa, at the time, the announcement of the explanation was postponed to June 1.
