Amari "Tigress" Avery, a six-year-old Filipina-American golf champion, is being touted as the next Tiger Woods, reports BalitangAmerica.tv. Aside from being born on the same day as Woods (December 30), Avery also has an African-American father and an Asian mother. Both golfers grew up in Riverside, California and experienced their first holes-in-one at the Heartwell golf course in Long Beach, according to AsianJournal.com.
The prodigy does have one edge over the golf superstar, though. She won the Callaway Junior World Championships at age 6--two years earlier than Woods. Asked what she thought of him, Avery told ABC7.com, "I don’t like him because I could beat him."
This year, the Tigress finished first in the US Kids Golf Tour Championship, the Future Golf World Championship, and about a dozen local tournaments, according to BalitangAmerica.tv. It was her father, Andre Avery, who first thought of her moniker. "It was just a little joke, just fun, same birthday, whatever. But as time went on, the name kind of stuck," he told ABC7.com.
Avery trains every day after school because, as she told BalitangAmerica.tv, "Practice makes permanent." She aims to win at least two more tournaments this year, and she hopes to go pro when she becomes a teenager.
