Maria Ressa to leave ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs
ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs Head Maria Ressa will resign from the post she has held for six years effective January 2011, reports ABS-CBNNews.com. In an internal email released by ABS-CBN Corporate Communications, Ressa said she will not renew her contract when it expires on January 3, 2011. Because she has nearly six months worth of leaves of absence, she said she will go on a terminal leave starting November 15.
Ressa said, "There is a time and place for everything in our lives. My time and place as head of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs is nearing its end... Thank you for your trust and support, for following me even when I tilt at windmills." Replacing Ressa, ABS-CBN North America Bureau Chief Ging Reyes will arrive in Manila on October 18 to begin the transition.
According to GMANews.tv, the online arm of GMA-7 which is a rival network of ABS-CBN, "Ressa leaves ABS-CBN at a critical time for Philippine broadcasting." GMANews.tv said both stations were "chastised by viewers and political leaders for their blow-by-blow coverage of the August 23 hostage tragedy." The report added that Ressa was also "grilled at a Senate hearing for the coverage and for a purported conflict of interest as a part-time contributor for CNN, her former employer with which ABS-CBN News has a video-sharing agreement."
