Department of Tourism allocates P60 M to P100 M for Facebook, Twitter, "new media promotions"

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has allocated "P60 million to P100 million for digital strategy or new media promotions," reports Vicente Romano III, DOT undersecretary for planning and promotions, said the budget will be used for "social networking, online advertising, search engine optimization and special projects." It will also be used to "develop the DOT website and establish an industry linkage platform."

Because Filipinos are "among the heavy users of Facebook and Twitter," Romano said social networking will be "an important component of DOT’s campaigns." He mentioned "Voluntourism," a Twitter-based campaign initiated by volunteers "without the DOT’s prodding." He told, "We just need to come out with programs and campaigns that will harness all of this goodwill."

The DOT also aims to create a searchable database of resorts, hotels, and transportation and tour operators, among others. Social games "ala Farmville" to promote local tourist spots may also be in the works, Romano hinted according to

The fund for new media campaigns came from the DOT’s previous budget for marketing, DOT Secretary Alberto Lim said in an report.
