FIFA recognizes new PH Football Federation President Mariano Araneta
FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), the international governing body of football, has recently recognized the leadership of the new Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President Mariano "Nonong" Araneta.
GMANews.tv reports that Araneta replaced Jose Mari Martinez, who was ousted due to alleged corruption last month, but FIFA had continued to recognize Martinez as the leader of the PFF until recently. In a letter to PFF general secretary Ramon F. Manuel, FIFA Vice President and Association Committee Chairman Geoff Thompson said the decision to oust Martinez by a majority vote was in accordance with the PFF By-Laws.
The leadership dispute within the PFF figured in the negotiations of the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup. Martinez decided to hold the semi-final home game between the Philippines and Indonesia in Jakarta, supposedly without consulting the Philippine football team.
