The Philippine national men’s football team, also known as the Azkals, won the Fair Play Award in the recent Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup, reports Manila Times. The team had the least number of fouls and cards in the tournament, according to SunStar.
Philippine Football Federation President Mariano Araneta told Manila Times that the award is the first Suzuki Cup citation that the Philippine team has ever received since it joined the tournament more than a decade ago. "The Filipinos expressed the true essence of sportsmanship in the tournament."
After beating Vietnam-the league’s defending champion-2-0 last month, the Philippines qualified for the semi-final round but lost to Indonesia. The Azkals are now preparing for three major events this year: the Asean Football Federation Challenge Cup in February, the qualifying event for the World Cup in July, and the Southeast Asian Games football event in November.
