Manny Pacquiao wants more benefits for Pinoy athletes
Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao wants to offer Filipino athletes more benefits by revising the Sports Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001, ABS-CBN News reported on Tuesday.
The congressman said he will propose amendments to the law to help athletes like Olympic boxing winners Leopoldo Serrantes and Anthony Villanueva. Now retired, Serrantes and Villanueva both suffer from health ailments and financial difficulties. Serrantes, 48, has a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease while Villanueva, 65, had a stroke that left half of his body paralyzed.
Pacquiao, vice chairperson of the House committee on youth and sports development, said, "Maraming mga atletang Pilipino na hindi kasing palad ko na nangangailangan ng tulong ng gobyerno." ("A lot of Filipino athletes aren’t as lucky as me and need help from the government.")
According to the ABS-CBN report, Pacquiao is working on increasing pension and medical benefits for Serrantes and Villanueva through an amendment to the Sports Incentives Law.
