GMA calls Reyes "a patriot," Erap calls him "a good general"
Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo praised the late former military chief Angelo Reyes for his "courage and patriotic service," in a statement released yesterday. GMA News quoted the former President as saying, "He served the country well in uniform and in the halls of government, particularly in a critical moment in our history when our people called for radical reform of governance."
According to the report, Reyes led the military hierarchy in withdrawing support from then President Joseph Estrada in 2001. They supported EDSA Dos, which catapulted Arroyo, vice president at the time, to the presidency. During her nine-year term, Reyes was appointed head of National Defense (2001 to 2003), Interior and Local Government (2004 to 2006), Environment and Natural Resources (2006 to 2007), and Energy (2007 to 2010).
Yesterday, Estrada also expressed condolences to Reyes’ family, reports GMA News. "In spite of what happened at EDSA Dos, I will always remember him as a good general." According to GMA News, he and Reyes have patched things up earlier.
Reyes died yesterday from what the police said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
