P-Noy orders MMDA to clean metropolis "Singapore style"
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has been tasked to clean the metropolis "Singapore style," reports Manila Bulletin.
Earlier this month, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Ramon Paje said President Noynoy Aquino instructed him to implement the same strictness observed in Singapore when it comes to street cleanliness.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said in the Manila Bulletin report, "Napakaganda pong panukala iyon. Makikipagtulungan po ako sa mga metro mayors pati na ang DENR at iba’t ibang ahensiya. Pipilitin po naming tuparin ’yong tagubilin ng ating mahal na pangulo."
("That is a great proposal. I will seek the help of the metro mayors as well as that of the DENR and various agencies. We will strive to follow the instruction of our beloved President.")
Paje praised Tolentino for heading the strict implementation of the country’s anti-littering laws in September. Since then, more than 21,000 people have been apprehended for acts such as spitting or indiscriminately throwing away waste. Those caught were fined at least P500, according to the MMDA.
