Sen. Pia Cayetano finds "incredulous" how Ayala Alabang council "arrogated to itself the power and responsibility to regulate drugs and devi
Sen. Pia Cayetano said on February 28 that the Ayala Alabang barangay council should have consulted the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) before passing an ordinance that requires residents to present prescriptions to buy condoms, among others.
ABS-CBN News quoted Cayetano’s statement: "It is incredulous how the local council of Barangay Ayala Alabang has arrogated to itself the power and responsibility to regulate drugs and devices, and even to determine what’s safe and what’s not."
Cayetano said she sponsored the passage of the FDA Law, which gives the government body "full powers to regulate food, drugs and other devices." She added, "I’m not aware of any law or bill authorizing the transfer of power to regulate drugs from the FDA to the barangay. Since time immemorial, that power has been lodged in the FDA, which was formerly known as the Bureau of Food and Drugs."
The Senator, who resides in Ayala Alabang, said the council’s move is a "usurpation of power."
