Azkals lose to Mongolia 1-2 but advance to next round
The Azkals lost to Mongolia’s Blue Wolves, 1-2, at the second leg of the qualifying match in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in Ulan Bator today, reports ABS-CBN News. However, the Philippine team advanced to the next round because of their 3-2 goal aggregate, the total score of the two matches against Mongolia. The Azkals won the first leg, 2-0, last month in Bacolod.
James Younghusband scored the Philippines’ lone goal in the third minute of today’s match, reports ABS-CBN News. However, Mongolia pulled ahead with a goal in the 21st minute and another in the 34th minute.
ABS-CBN News quoted Azkals Coach Hans Michael Weiss: "We have tough and harsh conditions, minus 10, minus 12 degree (Celsius)... The players were also not happy with the performance but I told them that we have to be realistic and (that) these conditions are (different from conditions in) tropical areas." He added, "In the end, I’m happy that we’re through."
Phil Younghusband, who delivered the second goal in the Bacolod match, was not able to finish the game due to a pulled hamstring. He will have to rest for a couple of weeks, Weiss said.
According to ABS-CBN News, the Philippines had 12 goal attempts and seven free kicks, and incurred one yellow card. Meanwhile, Mongolia had 16 attempts and six free kicks, plus two yellow cards.
In Myanmar, the Azkals will face the host country on March 21, 3:30 p.m.; Palestine on March 23, 3:30 p.m.; and Bangladesh on March 25, 6 p.m.
