Former MTRCB chief Armida Siguion-Reyna insists on junking film censorship in PH
(SPOT.ph) Armida Siguion-Reyna, singer, actress and film producer, has renewed calls to junk film censorship in the country, which is implemented by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), reports Manila Bulletin.
"Panahon na talaga para wala ng censorship. Ewan ko ba naman sa mga tao sa gobyerno at sa simbahan, bakit ba sila natatakot na walang censorship at classification na lang o completely, walang censorship," the former MTRCB chairperson said earlier this month.
("It’s really time to eradicate censorship. I don’t know why people in the government and the church are afraid of having classification instead of censorship, or completely junking censorship.")
She praised independent filmmakers who decided to screen their works abroad, bypassing local censors. Asked about Siguion-Reyna’s stand, current MTRCB chairperson Grace Poe-Llamanzares said, "It's her own opinion."
According to Manila Bulletin, Siguion-Reyna has long opposed film censorship but her recent statement "came as a surprise to many given her close ties" with Poe, daughter of her friends Susan Roces and the late Fernando Poe Jr.
