7 Bataan barangays enact RH ordinances similar to Ayala Alabang
(SPOT.ph) Seven barangay councils in Balanga City, Bataan have enacted ordinances similar to the Ayala Alabang ordinance, which requires prescriptions to buy condoms, among other provisions, reports Inquirer.net. The barangays are Puerto Rivas Lote, Puerto Rivas Ibaba, Puerto Rivas Itaas, Cupang Proper, Cupang West, Tortugas and Tanato.
Bishop Ruperto Santos from Balanga said the barangay councils might have passed the ordinances because of a forum they attended that had lecturers from the Ayala Alabang council. Santos was the one who organized the forum, reports Inquirer.net.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rivas Ibaba Barangay Chairman Manny Bustamante told Inquirer.net that they copied the Ayala Alabang ordinance to avoid reducing their village population. The Puerto Rivas Ibaba barangay has almost 5,000 residents.
The barangay captains gave copies of the enacted ordinance to Mayor Jose Enrique Garcia III at an anti-Reproductive Health (RH) Bill rally in Balanga City on Saturday, Santos told Inquirer.net. Around 10,000 people attended the gathering.
"We signed a covenant where we promised to protect the lives of our constituents, including the unborn," Tortugas Barangay Chairman Victor Baluyot told Inquirer.net. Santos said the covenant shows "the unity and harmony between the church and government."
Inquirer.net reports that the Balanga City government is expected to deliberate on the ordinances.
