Evacuate Taal Volcano, Phivolcs urges children, elderly and pregnant women

(SPOT.ph) The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recommended the immediate evacuation of children, pregnant women and the elderly residing near Taal Volcano as its quakes increase in numbers and intensity, reports Inquirer.net.

"The volcano is still very active and alert level two remains hoisted over it," Phivolcs research specialist Ed Villacorte said. He added that the Phivolcs will only raise the alert to level three "if the quakes (reach) Intensity IV to V."

Yesterday, the Phivolcs issued an advisory saying it recorded 10 seismic activities in Taal Volcano, one of which reached Intensity III in Barangay Pira-Piraso. The number of quakes recorded on Sunday was fewer than the recorded 20 quakes on Saturday but they were stronger, reports Inquirer.net.

Phivolcs also warned the residents living near Taal Volcano against the toxic gases it is emitting. "Breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to humans, animals and even cause damage to vegetation."

Of the approximately 5,000 residents of the volcano island, 1,373 people or 232 families earlier evacuated to the mainland towns of Batangas, reports Inquirer.net.
