US President Barack Obama announces Osama bin Laden’s death

(SPOT.ph) US President Barack Obama announced today that Osama bin Laden, leader of the group Al-Qaida tagged as the perpetrator of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, died last night in a US "targeted operation" in Islamabad, Pakistan, reports the Guardian. Bin Laden’s body is in the possession of American officials, reports The New York Times.

"Justice has been done," MSNBC quoted Obama as saying. His predecessor George W. Bush, who made bin Laden’s capture a top priority during his term, said, "This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001."

Bush added, "The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done."
