Boycott coral jewelry, save PH seas, say Twitter users
(SPOT.ph) After issues of illegal coral harvesting propagated the media, netizens are lobbying to protect endangered marine species threatened by such activities via the social networking site Twitter, reports GMA News. Twitter users are using hashtag or code #reefwatchPH to call more attention to the issue.
Twitter user @momblogger said on Thursday: "Please help save our Philippine seas by boycotting coral-accented jewelry and fashion accessories." Meanwhile other user @tonyocruz suggested a "global blog action day," where blog entries on coral smuggling will be published, on June 1.
"We're using (Twitter) to gather volunteers who will help restore the corals," said environment advocate and writer Anna Oposa in the report. "We want the government and the online community to know that we're watching." Apart from social media, Oposa suggested writing to government officials. She is especially targeting Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao whose province had been the site of coral harvesting.
